Polite Society is dedicated to reconstructing and preserving the
music and dance of the period 1840 to 1925. The troupe is involved in the development of
theatrical performances (for both stage and film) and the recreation of period social
events (for other organizations, museums, etc.) which reflect the elegance and splendor of
the Victorian era and the spirit and excitement of the Ragtime era.
Polite Society has been involved in numerous dance performances throughout the United
States for organizations such as the American Red Cross, Easter Seals, the Connecticut and
Wethersfield Historical Societies, the Mark Twain Memorial, the Wadsworth Atheneum,
Biltmore and Sagamore (Vanderbilt mansion museums), the Hartford Symphony, the Meriden
Symphony, and the United States Coast Guard Band, among others.
Polite Society made its film debut by choreographing dance sequences for and appearing in
the Florentine Film production of "The Boyhood of John Muir". Members of Polite
Society have appeared in a number of films since.
Polite Society has appeared regularly with the New York Ragtime Orchestra both in the
United States and throughout Japan.
In addition to period events and performances, the troupe and its parent organization, the
Vintage Dance Society, are involved in research, workshops, and seminars, and act as a
resource to other organizations that wish to recreate events with a Victorian or Ragtime
theme.
